The Lancet Digest, September 4th – 10th 2009
This week the Lancet launches its Series on South Africa. The first Editorial is on South African health policy while the other two are on organ donation in China and the efficiency of drug research in the USA.
The Articles are on treating non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes with otamixaban, raltegravir-based versus efavirenz-based combination therapy for HIV-1 patients and school-based initiatives for Afghan mental health. These are accompanied by Comments on otamixaban
, raltegravir in HIV treatment and children’s mental health in Afghanistan.
The Series launches with a review of South Africa’s health system and South African maternal and child health. There are also Comments on the South African health service and South African clinical research. There are also Perspectives on the country’s Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi; Hoosen Coovadia, the country’s foremost expert on mother-to-child transmission of HIV; and the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
Finally, the World Report is on a rural hospital in South Africa and developing drug resistance due to antibiotics in poultry. There is also a Comment on fad diets in Sweden.
