The Lancet Digest, August 2-8, 2008
This week in The Lancet:
This week’s editorial discusses the recent announcement that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies will be teaming up to provide US $500 million in funding for global tobacco-control programmes. As the editorial mentions, of particular interest is the focus on Africa, where smoking rates are comparatively low, which provides a great opportunity for early intervention.
A comment on supervised injection facilities discusses the global struggle to scale-up these initiatives in the face of ideological opposition, despite the growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating their benefits.
There is a brief report on the Paediatric Randomised to Early versus Deferred Antiretroviral Initiation in Cambodia and Thailand (PREDICT) study in the comments section.
There is an excellent reportage from Emily Y Y Chan about her experiences in taking part in the relief effort following the Sichuan earthquake in China.
This week’s articles include two studies on arthritis treatments; an investigation into the prophylactic effect of H pylori eradication on the development of metachronous gastric carcinoma after edoscopic resection for early gastric cancer; and, a study which found that influenza vaccination is not associated with a reduced rosk of community-acquired pneumonia during flu season.
