The Lancet Digest July 19-25, 2008
This week in The Lancet:
A short editorial in this week’s issue remark’s on the Chronic Poverty Report 2008-9 published last week that highlights some of the challenges of Millennium Development Goal 1 (reducing by half the proportion of people living in extreme poverty). A related comment also discusses the issue of global poverty and the recent release of a report by the Commission on Growth and Development which was praised by The World Bank. The comment authors suggest that the Report does little to address poverty reduction, especially within the context of environmental and climate change constraints.
A special report on the outcome of the G8 meeting held in Toyako, Japan, echoes concerns that were raised in a comment in last week’s issue of The Lancet. The special report outlines the financial commitments made by G8 members towards infectious diseases and health systems, while pointing out that maternal and child health, water and sanitation received little attention by the world leaders, as many were concerned might happen.
This week’s issue is largely focused on dementia: the lead editorial discusses the UK’s National Dementia Strategy, which is set to conclude consultations in the fall, and features two articles on new research into treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as several other related comments and perspectives.
