Announcing The Lancet-GHEC 2008 prize winners and we want YOU to contribute to our magazine on power, politics, and global health!
Hello everyone! After a few week’s absence, The Lancet Student podcast is back! There are a lot of us chatting away today and please have a listen if you can! We also discuss more about the exciting Medsin/Lancet Student global health magazine - see below!
I would like to showcase the winners of The Lancet-GHEC (Global health Education Consortium) 2008 prize for community service projects. The winners - Sandeep Kishore and Rohan Radikrishna - have both done amazing work to address global health challenges. Sandeep was successful in petitioning the WHO to add a statin drug to the Essential Medicines List; and, Rohan conducted a study on Uganda’s “night commuters” which resulted in the governor changing policy that led to the abrupt closure of shelters where the children were taking refuge. Congratulations to both Sandeep and Rohan and thank you for all of your fantastic work!
Now to some more exciting news news! The Lancet Student in collaboration with Medsin-UK will be launching a printed global health Magazine at the Medsin National Conference, UCL London on 25th and 26th October 2008. We are now soliciting articles for the first edition which will be entitled ‘Medsin and the Lancet Student present Power and Politics in Global Health’ and we would love YOU to contribute. The publication of this magazine will coincide with the most politically charged months seen in years. With elections in the US, Russia, the Olympic Games in China, the shifting political landscape of Latin America; the flux of emerging and established powers are likely to have huge implications for global health. It is a very interesting theme and it is important to discuss these issues among medical students and health care professionals. Please note that submisisons are not restricted to UK students. We encourage all students to submit articles. As well as being released in print, this will also be available online on the Medsin and the Lancet Student websites. Your articles should be no longer than 1000 words and should be submitted by the end of July. Please send your submissions to: student@lancet.com or rhona.macdonald@lancet.com. For helpful advice on how to write and submit your article, please visit here and as ever, I will be delighted to answer any queries or help in anyway I can. Have a great weekend. Rhona
