The Lancet Digest, May 24-30 2008

A diabetes themed issue this week, ahead of the American Diabetes Association meeting taking place in San Francisco in early June.

The best way to get a feel/overview to this diabetes issue of The Lancet is to listen to Jane Godsland and Richard Lane on this week’s podcast, it runs to 10 minutes.

Though here are a few headlines as well:

The long Editorial discusses the global challenge that we face in tackling diabetes; a staggering quarter of a billion people worldwide have the disease, with the figure set to increase to 380 million by 2025.

There are original research items covering a wide range of clinical and public-health issues in diabetic health:

  • - An Article suggesting that intensive insulin therapy given early could offset type 2 disease
  • - An Article from China highlighting how exercise and diet can substantially delay adult onset diabetes among high-   risk groups
  • - Another Article showing the worrying increase in type 1 disease among young people in finland.

Also Reviews and Seminars about clinical management of diabetes, and book reviews and profiles in the Perspectives section.

And not forgetting Burma, an important insight into the health-care issues confronting Burma in the appalling aftermarth of the cyclone there earlier this month.
